Houston-based environmental technology leader VLS Environmental Solutions has acquired Merichem Company's Caustic Services business, a strategic move that enhances its capacity in hazardous waste management and sustainable by-product reuse across chemical and petrochemical industries.
Merichem, founded in 1945, has an 80-year history of transforming spent caustics and other industrial by-products into applications for reuse, creating environmentally responsible solutions for global clients. As part of the acquisition, the business will be renamed VLS SustainChem and integrated into VLS’ Hazardous Waste division.
John Magee, CEO of VLS Environmental Solutions, said: “This acquisition provides the most technically advanced beneficial reuse and caustic waste solutions to industrial and refinery markets. By integrating Merichem's portfolio, we can now offer an unmatched level of sustainable solutions for clients across multiple industries.”
Kendra Lee, Chairman and CEO of Merichem, added: “We are thrilled to combine our heritage grounded in sustainability with VLS' expansive operational reach to deliver even greater value and sustainability to our customers.”
Chris Lobue, Executive VP of VLS Hazardous Waste Services, highlighted that the acquisition allows VLS to expand handling options for specific by-product streams such as spent caustics and sulfur-laden waste, helping clients meet regulatory and operational requirements.
The combined expertise of over 1,500 employees across more than 50 US locations positions VLS to set a new benchmark in the management, treatment, and beneficial reuse of hazardous and non-hazardous materials. The move also strengthens VLS’ commitment to sustainability-driven innovation, addressing both current and future industry challenges.
